learning board games for kids - Sorry

Sorry

Product Description

Editorial Review

This classic game of luck, strategy, and determination is easy to grasp for children as young as 6 years old, yet it's fun for adults and older siblings too. By drawing cards, players move their game pieces around the board, hoping to eventually accumulate all their pieces at the final destination--home sweet home. Sorry is known as the game of "sweet revenge," since players can send each other's pawns back to the starting line, thus forcing one another to lose ground and begin all over again. This kind of frustration may be hard for children under age 8 to handle. In fact, young ones typically crumble into tears of outrage when their pawns are cavalierly sent back. The only recourse is to teach children how to plot their own revenge, which makes them feel as powerful as superheroes.

Product Description

Since 1934, players of all ages have been chasing one another around the classic game board, trying to get their own four pawns from Start to Home. But it's not that easy, because you never know what the next card will hold: Will you move forwards or backwards' Will you hit a slide and shoot ahead, or will an opponent bump you back to start' For 2 to 4 players. Contents include: Sorry! game board, deck of cards, and 16 pawns.

Create Working Electronic Circuits
Snap Circuits comes with over 60 pieces to create 305 different electronic projects. The pieces, which include snap wires, a slide switch, a resistor, a microphone, and capacitors, snap together easily onto the included plastic grid--no soldering required. Each piece is numbered and color-coded to make identifying them easy. These components combine to create working circuit boards just like the ones found inside televisions, radios, and other electronic devices.

Simple, Fun Projects Let Kids Learn While They Play
With its easy-to-follow instructions, Snap Circuits gives your child a hands-on education in how electrical circuits run the everyday devices that they're familiar with. They'll also gain valuable lessons in building and in following instructions. The project manuals include large color illustrations and simple directions for each project.

The project list includes all of the projects included in the SC-100 set and 204 additional projects, including a photosensitive electronic organ, a lie detector, an AM radio, and a two-finger touch lamp. With these projects, children will experiment with electric switches, integrated circuits, digital circuits, fuses, and the transformation of circuit sounds into other sounds.

Grow as You Go
Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, kids can build on their skills as they progress through the manual. The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a fire fan symphony, a water-detection alarm, a delayed-action fan, and more.

Design Your Own Circuits and Upgrade Your Kit
Once children have mastered several of the techniques introduced in this kit, they can use the components to experiment and create their own customized circuits and electronic devices. The Snap Circuits SC-300 can also be upgraded to the Snap Circuits Pro, Snap Circuits Extreme, or SCM-400 with the purchase of a UC-50, UC-70, or UC-100 upgrade kit, respectively. Kids will enjoy additional parts, manuals, and projects that'll take their kit--and their fun--to the next level.

Snap Circuits SC-300 requires four AA batteries, which are not included.

"Was Claude Monet a painter, a jazz musician, or an Italian dictator?" "Name four of the seven colors in the spectrum." Questions like these are sure to get your child's mental gears meshing while playing the Brain Quest Game for grades one to six. The object is to be the first player to finish a race around the game board, designed to mimic a school playground, by correctly answering questions from the Brain Quest cards. Each of the 256 cards contains questions and answers in categories such as math, science, social studies, English, and grab bag (a euphemism for cultural literacy). Brain Quest's folded cards prevent the I-saw-the-answer-on-the-back problem while allowing even the player asking the question to guess the answer.

A great resource for classroom teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone who has enjoyed E.D. Hirsch's books on education (A Dictionary of Cultural Literacy), the Brain Quest Game is a non-threatening yardstick for measuring learning areas that might need attention. It's also the perfect showcase for helping children to display--and feel great about--how much they already know. Younger kids will enjoy the Brain Quest Game for preschool and kindergarten. Learning is a Blast!
Red Rover is a brightly colored plastic dog-shaped game unit that interacts with players. To begin play, 12 bones are spread face-down throughout the playing area. A player then touches Red Rover's rubber nose to select which game to play. Depending on age and skill level, players may choose between the Puppy Color Game involving only colors, or they may choose the more advanced Big Dog Challenge, involving colors, shapes, numbers, and letters.

Red Rover's friendly voice informs players which bone to search for via a large speaker integrated into the back of his head. Players can check to see whether or not they've grabbed the correct bone by placing it inside of Red Rover's mouth. If they're correct, Red Rover announces a new bone to look for. If the player chooses the wrong bone, Red Rover encourages them to return it to the play area and continue looking for the correct bone. By using positive encouragement, Red Rover makes learning fun and helps to keep children encouraged, even when they've gotten the answer wrong.

    Let's Play!
The Red Rover game unit is a friendly looking red plastic dog that features a speaker integrated into the back of his head. This speaker is loud, making it audible over a large area so that players across the room can keep track of the game play action. An integrated backpack-shaped storage compartment neatly holds all 12 bones, and rubber pads on Red Rover's base keep him from slipping or tipping over.

With no assembly required beyond the insertion of three AA batteries, Red Rover is designed for durability. His hard plastic body protects the interactive computer that controls game play. Although the design is simple, it does take some practice to get the placement of a bone in Red Rover's mouth just right so that he responds appropriately. This can be done by wiggling the bone around until he audibly acknowledges whether or not the correct bone has been chosen.

    What's in the Box
Red Rover game unit, 12 plastic bones, and game play instructions.
